AG Bell has carved out a separate track for adults with hearing loss (18 years and older) at the 2016 AG Bell Convention in Denver - “an unconvention within the convention.” Registration for “Unconventional” is set at $125 per person (for AG Bell members) and $225 for non-members. Registration is open now and will stay open right up until the convention.

The earlier you register, the better! Outside social activities (which will be a separate fee that will be gathered closer to the convention) are being designed by a committee and space will be limited. The registration fee will cover attendance at the Dena Goldstein Mixer, AG Bell Convention Welcome Party, the AG Bell General Session, Youth Initiative Focus Group Discussion, the Listening and Spoken Language Celebration, and access to the Exhibit Hall and access to the “Unconventional” discussion forum room.

Questions regarding this track? Contact Catharine McNally at c[email protected].

You will need to select UnConventional as part of your registration for the 2016 AG Bell Convention. If you have already registered, please contact the registrar at [email protected] to add UnConventional to your registration.

Letter to interested UnConventional attendees

Hello all!

I hope all is going well for you! I wanted to personally reach out to you to let you know about a new development at the AG Bell Convention this summer. We'll be announcing it on the website later today, and I'm hoping that you can help rally behind this and drum up excitement. I think you will be very excited to learn that we've put together a special convention rate AND fun schedule for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adult Population as an opportunity to be together, share ideas, support, and simply spend time rekindling - and forming new - friendships.

In observing this population of Adult Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals over the last several conventions and evaluating the former Section, it became clear that the energy and enthusiasm of this group is borne out of being together. There has been great enthusiasm for a "retreat" and a gathering, and we want to help facilitate this experience at the Convention in Denver.

This will follow an "Unconference" model -- or more aptly named, "UnConventional!" in which we will have a room designated, with CART-support for a morning on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2nd. There will be roundtable discussions, all peer-led in which we discuss topics and issues that we face in the "mainstream" world and draw support and ideas from one another. We're excited to also include a "Ted Talk" lunch with Ted Meyer, the incoming President, as an opportunity to discuss our role with the Association, and ways that we can effectively support AG Bell's mission. The afternoons will be "free time" in which we have group activities out in Denver, and still be able to make it back to the hotel in time for the Dena Goldstein Mixer, the Opening Reception, and on Saturday, for the LSL Celebration!

This will come with a reduced cost to our group, $125! ($225 for non-members) This reduction in registration reflects that we will not have access to the sessions, but rather, we will be facilitating our own sessions and spending time together! Registration will get us:

  • Our own session room for the morning on July 1 and July 2, with CART
  • Lunch with Ted Meyer
  • Opening Reception and Exhibit Hall
  • The Dena Goldstein Mixer
  • Keynote
  • Youth Initiative Pilot Project Focus Group
  • LSL Celebration

We are so excited for this new opportunity. We hope very much that you will be able to come to Denver and make this inaugural UnConventional a great success!
